Identity

What Bacteriostatic Water is

Bacteriostatic water isn't a research compound in the way the others on this site are. It's sterile water with a small amount of benzyl alcohol mixed in, a preservative that slows bacterial growth in a vial once it's been opened and drawn from more than once. It's closer to a multi-use saltshaker with an anti-clumping agent than a drug itself, a storage and mixing tool for other peptides rather than something studied for its own effects on the body.

Research

What the research has looked at

In plain terms, with a link to every study. The most useful thing to notice is what each study was done in.

There's no research on 'bacteriostatic water' as a named product, since it's a standard pharmacy preparation rather than a novel compound. What is published is research on its active ingredient, benzyl alcohol, as a preservative in injectable solutions, plus practical studies on whether multi-use vials stay free of contamination in real-world settings.

review2007

This review compared preservatives used across many approved injectable products and why each was chosen. It reported that benzyl alcohol and phenol are the two preservatives most commonly used specifically in peptide and protein products, more often than in other drug types.

Antimicrobial preservative use in parenteral products: past and present.
Meyer and colleagues, Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences

lab2021

Chemists tested how three different preservatives, including benzyl alcohol, interact with lab-made peptides in solution, using light-scattering and other physical measurements rather than any living cells or animals. Unlike the other two preservatives tested, benzyl alcohol didn't change the peptide's shape, and in one case was linked to the peptide staying dissolved under salt stress.

Antimicrobial Excipient-Induced Reversible Association of Therapeutic Peptides in Parenteral Formulations.
D'Addio and colleagues, Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences

lab2005

Researchers deliberately added bacteria and fungi to samples of a benzyl-alcohol-preserved drug to see how fast the preservative could kill them off, then separately cultured vials that had been drawn from repeatedly in simulated and real clinic settings over ten days. Some organisms survived even a full day of contact with the preserved solution, but none of the multi-use vials sampled from simulated or real clinical use turned out to be contaminated.

Questions

Common questions about Bacteriostatic Water

What is Bacteriostatic Water?

Bacteriostatic water isn't a research compound in the way the others on this site are. It's sterile water with a small amount of benzyl alcohol mixed in, a preservative that slows bacterial growth in a vial once it's been opened and drawn from more than once. It's closer to a multi-use saltshaker with an anti-clumping agent than a drug itself, a storage and mixing tool for other peptides rather than something studied for its own effects on the body. SBz Industries sells it for laboratory research only.

What's the difference between bacteriostatic water and regular sterile water?

Regular sterile water for injection has nothing added and is meant to be drawn from once and discarded. Bacteriostatic water has a small amount of benzyl alcohol mixed in, which slows bacterial growth so the same vial can be used for more than one draw.

Does benzyl alcohol kill bacteria instantly?

No. Lab testing found some organisms survived even a full day of contact with a benzyl-alcohol-preserved solution. It slows growth over time rather than sterilizing on contact.

How should Bacteriostatic Water be stored?

Room temperature, per supplier spec Vials ship in plain outer packaging with no product name on the outside.

Is Bacteriostatic Water tested, and can I see the results?

Yes. An independent lab tests every compound: it confirms the compound is what the label says and measures purity by HPLC. The latest certificate is on the product page, and you can read it before you order.

Who is permitted to purchase Bacteriostatic Water?

Researchers and institutions, 21 or over. By ordering you confirm the material is for laboratory research and will not be used in humans or animals.
